  • Hans and Zacharias Janssen

Janssen Zacharias with the help of his father, Hans, is said to have invented the first compound microscope. His microscope could magnify 9x.
  • Robert Hooke

Robert Hooke is said to be the first to use the term "cell" to describe plant and animal cells. He got the idea from the resemblance to a monk's cell.
  • Francesco Redi

Francesco Redi disproved spontaneous generation by experimenting with rotting meat. He tested this by placing rotten meat in a closed space and rotten meat in an open space. Flies only appeared in the open space, thus proving that flies must come from flies and not spontaneously on the meat.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first person to study bacteria. He also disproved spontaneous generation by witnessing the splitting of bacteria.
  • Robert Brown

Robert Brown was the first person to recognise the neucleus as part of the cell. He also came up with the term neucleus.
  • Theodor Schwann

Theodor Schwann discovered pepsin, discovered metabolism, and said that "all living things are made up of cells and cell products". He also did many studies on the cells that make up nails, feathers, hair, and teeth.
  • Matthais Schleiden

Matthais Schleiden wrote the book "Contributions to Phytogenisis" in which he said that all parts of a plant are made of cells. He also did research on the necleus and said that it helped with cell division.
  • Rudolf Virchow

Rudolf Virchow is said to be the main founder of cell theory along with Theodor Schwann. He was the first to recognise Lukemia cells. He also furthered the work of Robert Remak who said that all cells came from preexciting cells when those cells split.
  • Gregor Mendel

Gregor Mendel is known as the father of genetics. He did exstensive reaserch on pea plants and their variations. His work led to the discovery of chromosomes and DNA.
  • Camillo Golgi

Camillo Golgi was the discoverer of the Golgi Apparatus (named for himself). He also did much work on nervous tissue and discovered the "staining method" which is how he discovered the Golgi Apparatus.
